Grade 5 Monkey Masks

In the spirit of our Tropical themed Grandparent's Day, we sculpted monkey masks out of sculpting plaster and painted colorful monkeys! To begin, I built 20 monkey face forms with plastic molds, newspaper and tape. Then with the help of some special parents and grandparents we sculpted the masks followed by painting them the next week. We looked at images of the colorful monkeys of Central and South America for our inspiration. Check out the monkeys..they had a ball creating!

Grade 4 Monkey paintings

Grandparent's Day is a special day of celebration at FPD; honoring Grand persons in the life of our students. The theme this year "Tropical/Island" lends itself well to student artwork. We have been working the last two months on an assortment of projects relating to this theme. These monkey paintings show off the drawing skill and the personality of my little 4th grade artists.

Grade 3 Parrots

After studying John James Audubon and his bird drawings, 3rd grade artists drew and painted tropical parrots. We observed the beautiful colors, textures and lines on images of real parrots and included the same bright colors and markings in our paintings. The students then filled in their background with a natural tropical environment. "A flock of our parrots will be displayed for Grandparent's Day reflecting this year's tropical, island theme.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

4th Grade artists created Mexican inspired lizards out of clay. We began with an oval pinch pot; forming body, head and tail and then added legs. Students had the most fun painting them with bright colors and adding interesting designs!

 

 

 

 

Grade 3 Sea Turtles

3rd grade artists created sea turtles starting with forming a basic pinch pot and then attaching head, tail and legs. They created their own special designs in the turtle shell and glazed with their choice of colors. Check out these colorful swimmers!



Grade 5 Ceramic Little People

5th Graders learned about gesture and proportion while creating ceramic self-portraits. Each figure is unique and represents the artist and a hobby or favorite pose. My artists spent two weeks (I only see them once a week) building their ceramic figure and 2 weeks glazing. This project was challenging and I am really proud of their work!

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 



 

Grade 3 North American Birds!

In 3rd grade we read "The Boy Who Drew Birds" and learned about the artist/scientist, John James Audubon. Students were fascinated with the story and life of Audubon and were anxious to try their hand at drawing birds. We did guided drawings of Blue Birds, Kingfishers, Owls, Ducks and Hummingbirds. Students were able to choose the bird they would draw for their project and I demonstrated tips and techniques for optimum use of colored pencil.
